My Creative Process / Moj Kreativni Proces

Although lately I enjoy painting landscapes of nature increasingly, for some reason I always return to painting city scenes.

I guess no matter how much the artist tries to create his own world, eventually ends up painting what surrounds him.
I must admit that to me personally what I paint is not important, it’s how I paint it.
I’m more fascinated by the relationship between light and shadow, color and contrasts, perfect balance that appears for a moment in the movement of chaos.
For that reason, no matter what I paint, I try to emphasize certain things that are interesting and leave out those boring, less important.

Because nature creates harmony and balance most pleasurable to the human eye, but I wanted to paint an urban motif, I decided to try to integrate that nature’s feel in my latest artwork.

Led by this idea, I remembered one of my landscapes that I had previously painted ( you can see it here https://zlatkomusicart.wordpress.com/2014/09/21/sunset-in-the-forest/ ) , so I decided to apply the same principle to my new painting.

In this case pedestrians replace the trees, source of light and perspective are similar but balance in composition is slightly different.
Here is short description of process of creating my latest artwork “Shadows passing by” in few simple stages.

First stage – sketching, determining the perspective and light source, outlining the silhouettes.

After the first phase, which is also the most difficult for me because I don’t like to draw as much as I like to paint, I move on to the more interesting part.

Second stage – underpainting and determining focus.

Often after this stage painting starts to look almost finished to me. At this point I can assess whether I will be pleased with the final result or if it will turn into a painstaking project of fixing mistakes.

The third phase – I add more details, but not too much so that painting does not lose freshness and color becomes oversaturated.

This part of the process I enjoy the most. From that moment I am departing from narrative painting allowing my imagination to guide me. I guess I believe that every artist creates abstract art, the observer determines the manner in which to experience the artwork.

Sometimes I repeat the whole process, but in this case I did not because I was pleased with the final result.

1.2.3.
———————————————————————————————————

Pošto priroda stvara harmoniju i ravnotežu najugodniju ljudskom oku

Prva faza – skiciranje, određujem perspektivu, izvor svjetlosti i ocrtavam siluete ( SLIKA br.1 ).

  1. This was so interesting for me. I’m reading through it for a second time, because I am interested in how other artists who I admire work. I’ve never really tried to put in words my perspective, you’ve done a great job describing your creative process. To think of your “pedestrians replacing the trees” for your city scene is awesome!!! I am learning a lot from you. Loved this too…”it will turn into a painstaking project of fixing mistakes”. I can so relate. Some paintings just flow so smoothly… Others like you said are painstaking projects. Thanks so much for sharing this.

    • The best way for us artists is to learn from each other, I’m glad you find my blog useful. About fixing mistakes, when painting flow smoothly as you said, it’s the best feeling, but what I realized is that I learned more from painstaking projects … Maybe learning from mistakes is hardest, but also the best way to progress. I always
remind myself to enjoy the journey not the destination. Thank you for visiting my blog regularly, it means a lot to me, have a nice weekend.

      • You’re right, but I get very frustrated with it. I’ll share a painting that has been a pain for me in my next post.

Hey, do you have instagram? I’ve been showing your art and have some people who are not on facebook, but want to follow you on instagram.

You have a great weekend too. 🙂

      • I guess the frustration is part of the journey, but sometimes the best thing is to take a break, or start working on a new one. After all painting should be fun…Unfortunately I don’t have instagram, I’ve been meaning to create an account, probably in the near future.
Thank you for sharing my art by the way.
