I finally finished my new abstract painting. I used combination of plaster and acrylic paint on canvas for texture.

I painted this one only with a big brush, reducing in that way details to basic shapes and concentrating on colors and composition. The most interesting thing in the process was painting in multiple transparent layers and then adding a final thick layer of color.

The result was beautiful texture in painting with depth and compelling contrast, especially in the sky area.

Reflections of memories / Refleksija sjećanja

A few months ago on the way back from Croatia, while I was sitting on the bus gathering impressions, the sun was setting on the beautiful coast of Dalmatia.
Because at that moment I didn’t have a camera close at hand, or any pen and paper to capture that beautiful scene, I stared out the window trying to burn it into my memory. While the view of the coastline slowly began to disappear, more and more obscured by the rocky Biokovo mountain, in my mind I was already starting to work on my new painting.
Upon returning home and after a short night’s sleep, the next morning I picked up the largest canvas I had and started to paint.
In an attempt to capture the moment from memory, I used a large brush and palette knife without going into too much descriptive details.
The final result was this abstract landscape “Reflections of memories”.

Prije par mjeseci u povratku iz Hrvatske, dok sam sjedio u autobusu i sabirao utiske, sunce se spuštalo na predivnu obalu Dalmacije.
Pošto u tom trenutku nisam imao fotoaparat pri ruci, niti bilo kakvu olovku i papir da zabilježim tu predivnu scenu, gledao sam kroz prozor pokušavajući da svaki momenat, svaku impresiju urežem u pamćenje. Pogled na obalu je sve češće zaklanjalo kamenito Biokovo, a ja sam u mislima već povlačio prve poteze svoje nove slike.
Po povratku kući i nakon kraćeg sna, uzeo sam najveće platno koje sam imao i počeo da nanosim boju dok me sjećanje još dobro služi.
Pokušavajući da dočaram trenutak, koristio sam velike četke i špahtlu ne ulazeći previše u opisne detalje da ne izgubim impresiju momenta.
Konačni rezultat je bio ovaj abstraktni pejzaž “Refleksija sjećanja”.

Fall in love with art / Zaljubiti se u umjetnost

The moment you fall in love with your work.
It doesn’t matter if you are an artist or you just like to draw sometimes, either on canvas with the goal to create a work of art, or out of boredom on a napkin, you know that feeling.

Almost everyone has a bunch of doodles at home, drawn while talking on the phone or in similar situations…These silly little works of art can be difficult to throw in the trash, for some reason we attach value to them.
I get emotionally attached to my work in the same way.

For a long time I didn’t want to show my paintings to anyone and to sell them was out of the question. All because of that emotional attachment.
Only when I started to post pictures of my work on my Facebook page,
I realized something. There are people who share the same love for art as me, people who are not artists but feel a deep emotional connection with art. They start to perceive their stories in my art.
At that point, my paintings are no longer mine alone, these people are no longer strangers. They become friends, because something in common binds us.

Today I have the pleasure to demonstrate that connection.
Some of my paintings found a new home in Toronto, Canada.

Trenutak kad se zaljubiš u svojih ruku djelo.
Svako ko se bavi umjetnošću ili bar ponekad nešto nacrta, bilo na platnu s ciljem da stvori umjetničko djelo ili iz dosade na salveti, zna taj osjećaj.
Svi kući imaju hrpu papirića sa švrljotinama nastalim dok pričaju na telefon ili u sličnim situacijama…Ta mala umjetnička djela se teško bacaju u smeće, mi im nesvjesno pridajemo vrijednost.
Tako se i ja vežem za svoje radove.

Dugo vremena sam odbijao da pokazujem svoje slike, da ih prodam ili poklonim nije mi ni padalo na pamet.
To je ta čudna emotivna vezanost, pa makar i za škrabotine…

Kad sam počeo da postavljam slike na Facebook stranici koju sam otvorio na nagovor, shvatio sam nešto. Postoje ljudi koji dijele istu ljubav prema umjetnosti, ljudi koji se ne bave slikarstvom, ali osjećaju duboku povezanost prema slici. Smišljaju svoje priče, vežu svoje emocije i doživljaje za moj rad.
U tom trenutku moje slike prestaju biti samo moje a ti ljudi prestaju biti stranci i postaju prijatelji. Prijatelji, jer nas veže nešto zajedničko.

Danas imam čast da demonstriram tu povezanost. Moje slike krase zidove dalekog Toronta, okeani nisu prepreka da se dijeli ljubav prema umjetnosti.

Music in pictures / Muzika u slikama

It is strange how nature has a different kind of vibe compared to urban areas. Since I’m a big fan of music, when I paint, I like to imagine the appropriate soundtrack for a scene that I’m painting, and for nature is almost always some kind of classical music.
To give an example, stormy sea sounds like The fourth movement of the New World Symphony, composed by Dvorak, mountain stream could sound like Moonlight Sonata (Beethoven) and of course there is Vivaldi’s “Four seasons” for any kind of landscape…
Opposite to that, city scenes have Jazzy, Blues or Pop Rock kind of feel.
That affects a lot on way how I paint something.

Because today I’m posting a painting of a stream , I wanted to share with you the feeling I had while creating this artwork.
The movement and reflections with light bouncing of the surface gives me the sensation of calming and pleasant music. Every brush stroke is like a note in composition.

Zanimljivo je kako priroda izaziva drugačije osjećaje nasuprot gradovima. Pošto sam ja veliki ljubitelj muzike, često volim da upoređujem te osjećaje sa muzikom, kao da na neki način scena koju slikam ima svoju ličnu kompoziciju.
Kada je riječ o prirodi, ta kompozicija iz nekog razloga je skoro uvijek klasična.
Na primjer olujno more može da zvuči kao Dvořákova IX. simfonija “Iz Novog svijeta” (4 stavak), planinski potok kao “Mjesečeva sonata” (Ludwig van Beethoven), a naravno Vivaldijeva “Četiri godišnja doba” su prikladni za sve vrste pejzaža.
Nasuprot tome urbane scene uvijek odzvanjaju u Džez, Bluz ili Pop Rok ritmu, a to utiče na moj pristup slikanju.
Pošto danas postavljam sliku sa motivom potoka, htio sam da podjelim taj osjećaj koji sam imao dok sam slikao ovu sliku.
Osjećaj pokreta, reflekcije na površini vode i svjetlost koja pleše i kontsantno se mjenja kao tonovi u savršeno ukloplenoj kompoziciji.
Svaki pokret kista prati jedan ton.
